Ledger Live Ubuntu Setup: AppImage, FUSE and USB Access

Set Up Ledger Live on Ubuntu

For Ledger Live Ubuntu setup, first make the application launch normally, then check hardware wallet access. The current application name is Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live. Ubuntu users often encounter AppImage runtime dependencies and USB permissions at different stages. Treating these as separate issues is more useful than repeatedly downloading the same file or changing unrelated network settings.

Identify Your Ubuntu Release and Architecture

Open Settings and review the system information before selecting a download. Record the Ubuntu release and whether your processor is x86_64 or ARM. An Ubuntu version number does not tell you the processor architecture. Follow Ledger’s current installation requirements; older screenshots and advice for another release may no longer describe your system.

Get the Linux Download

Visit the official Ledger download page, select Linux, and keep the AppImage in a folder owned by your Ubuntu user. Open its properties and allow it to execute as a program. Double-click the file to start it. If you create a launcher later, check that it points to the installed copy you intend to use.

Understand Ubuntu and FUSE

If launch fails with a missing FUSE library message, check the official AppImage FUSE documentation. Its Ubuntu guidance identifies libfuse2 for Ubuntu 22.04 and notes that Ubuntu 24.04 renamed that package libfuse2t64. These are release-specific package names, not a reason to install every FUSE package or remove your desktop’s existing FUSE components.

Use the package manager for your actual release and review its proposed changes. If your system reports a different dependency or sandbox error, keep that error separate. Do not assume the missing-library fix applies to every failure, and do not globally disable security controls merely because an AppImage failed to launch.

Enable Appropriate USB Access

Connect the Ledger device with a cable that supports data, unlock it on the hardware, and close other wallet applications. If Ubuntu can see the USB device but the wallet application cannot open it, review Ledger’s udev rules repository. Device access rules apply to supported Ledger hardware identifiers and are preferable to broad permission changes on every USB or hidraw device.

Follow the repository’s current installation and reload instructions after reviewing them. Administrative permission may be needed to install system rules, but the wallet application should still run as your ordinary user. Reconnect the device when instructed. If you changed user group membership, follow Ubuntu’s session requirements before judging whether the change worked.

Finish Onboarding Without Reinitializing

Select the correct device and setup path in the application. For an already configured wallet, connect the existing device and add its accounts. A new hardware wallet generates its recovery phrase on the device itself. Neither Ubuntu setup nor a USB permission repair requires typing those words into the computer, a terminal, or a support form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I follow a guide written for an older Ubuntu release?

Use it only as background. Confirm package names, support requirements, and security behavior against current documentation for your installed release.

Is a powered-on device proof that USB data works?

No. Charging and data transfer are separate functions. Try a known data cable and a direct computer port before modifying Linux permissions.
