Set Up Ledger Live on an M1 Mac
Ledger Live M1 setup uses the official macOS application and a USB connection to a Ledger hardware wallet. Ledger Wallet is the app’s current name. Before following an old M1 tutorial, check the current download options and requirements because application packaging can change independently of the Mac’s processor.
Identify Your M1 Mac and macOS Version
Open Apple menu > About This Mac. Confirm the Apple M1 chip and note the installed macOS version. An M1 computer’s processor does not tell you whether its operating system is still supported by the current application. Compare those details with Ledger’s requirements before installing.
Choose the macOS package provided by the official Ledger download page. If it presents a processor choice, follow that choice rather than a link saved from an early Apple silicon launch guide.
Understand Native Apps and Rosetta
Apple silicon can use native software, universal applications, and certain Intel applications through Rosetta where macOS supports it. You can inspect an installed application’s kind through Finder’s Get Info window. Apple’s guide to Intel applications on Apple silicon explains these categories.
Do not assume that every M1 installation requires Rosetta or that an unofficial ARM build is necessary. Follow the package Ledger currently supplies. If macOS requests a translation component during a verified installation, review Apple’s explanation for your macOS release before continuing.
Install and Open the Application
Open the downloaded installer and move the app into Applications as instructed. Launch that copy once installation finishes. If an older copy exists in Downloads or on a mounted disk image, make sure your Dock shortcut points to the installed version you intend to use.
Read the exact first-launch message. A damaged-app or malware alert calls for checking the download, not repeatedly approving the same file. Use the current official installer and support guidance if the message persists.
Connect the Hardware Wallet by USB
Use a cable that supports data transfer and suits both ends of the connection. During initial troubleshooting, connect directly instead of through a docking station. An M1 MacBook may require approval for a new accessory; unlock the computer and respond to the prompt for your Ledger device.
Desktop device communication uses USB. The presence of Bluetooth in an M1 Mac does not enable the Bluetooth pairing workflow used by Ledger’s mobile application. Choose the connection method documented for the desktop edition.
Add Accounts Without Importing Recovery Words
Choose whether your hardware wallet is new or already configured. An existing device keeps its PIN and recovery setup when you connect it to an M1 Mac. Install the relevant coin app through My Ledger if needed, then add the corresponding account and wait for discovery.
Recovery words are not a Mac setup credential. Never enter them into a desktop app or browser to complete onboarding. For receiving, compare the address displayed by the application with the full address on the hardware screen before confirming.
M1 Setup Questions
Do I need a new Ledger for Apple silicon?
Changing the computer processor does not itself create a need for a different recovery phrase or new blockchain accounts. Check support for your existing hardware model and current software.
Why is the device powered but unavailable?
Power and USB data are separate. Try another data cable and check accessory approval before assuming a processor compatibility problem.
Can I reuse the accounts from an Intel Mac?
Yes, an existing device can be used to add its accounts on the new computer. Local labels and settings may need adjustment.
